Best Malayalam Movies
With a strong focus on stories and characters, rather than spectacle, the best Malayalam movies offer a window into the culture and society of Kerala. Some of the all-time greats are included in the list below.
One (2021)
When a social media post ignites a power struggle between the people chief minister and another politician willing to go to any length to get what he or she wants out of life, the principles of this ruler are put to the test as he is forced to fight for his reputation and the greater good.
CIA: Comrade in America (2017)
Though Comrade in America does have some flaws, it is ultimately a pleasant and entertaining movie to watch.
Maniyarayile Ashokan (2020)
Ashokan, a middle-aged man who does not appear to have stepped straight off a movie poster, feels significant FOMO because so many of his friends get married and settle into happy domesticity.
Ashokan goes to some extreme measures in order to correct his "planetary alignments" (as advised by an astrologer). Overall, although there is not much substance to the narrative, the visuals are lovely, as is all of the cast. It is a nice 2-hour long escape from reality.

"Forensic" leaves out the typical romantic sub-story Plot device to focus on what it does best: being a power-packed crime thriller with strong performances from its cast.
Varane Avashyamund (2020)
It is a great film. It is. The plot takes place in a Chennai apartment complex, and it is like a sweet slice-of-life story. Overall, the movie is endearing and uplifting, and it will make you smile.

Kappela (2020)
Jessie flees to live with Vishnu, at which point the plot shifts gears from "sweet, romantic slice-of-life" to "cunning deception."
The film message is ultimately rooted in patriarchy, albeit subtly - that females may only have a safe existence as long as they follow the rules set down by their fathers and mothers. Kappela is still a fantastic film, with strong cinematography, writing, and acting.
Uyare (2019)
Acid attacks are on the rise in South Asia, and their repercussions on those who are afflicted continue to be devastating. Pallavi is the main character of this film, a girl who aspires to work as a flight attendant.
Pallavi injuries induce light loss in her eyes as well. Vishal, a young pilot who is looking for a flight attendant, comes across Pallavi and tries to hire her despite her poor eyesight, but his father advises him against it on the grounds that doing so might put the passengers safety at risk.
Vishal talks about how Pallavi has been treated discriminatory during a press conference, and she becomes uncomfortable when her narrative is shared with the rest of the world.
Grandmaster (2012)
Mohanlal, the star of this action thriller from 2012, is one of South India most renowned actors and has had a successful career spanning decades. Soon after, three murders take place, leaving Chandrashekhar bewildered.
Chandrashekhar ex-wife name is Deepti, and he thinks she may be the fourth victim of this serial murderer.
Chandrashekhar even focuses in on a male who has been involved in three prior murder cases, but whether or not he is being utilized by the brains behind these homicides remains to be seen.
The plot of the film is not particularly unique, but it is done well and proves to be an entertaining watch.
Vikrithi (2019)
Emcee Thomas Vikrithi is based on a true story about a man named Sameer. This comedy-drama from Malayalam cinema is one of the finest in recent years, with just a few haywire sections in the second half.
Sudani From Nigeria (2018)
Sudani From Nigeria, a film that celebrates friendship in a small village in Kerala, is enjoyable for people of all ages. Samuel moves into Majeed house, and they quickly develop a close friendship.
This eventually draws the police attention to him and they come enquiring about his passport. This is a feel-good movie with superb quality that will remain with you long after watching it.
Angamaly Diaries (2017)
With a group of 86 new faces, the production of "Meesa Madhura" was a major risk. Director Lijo Jose Pelliserry tells the story of a crew of outlaws in Angamaly streets with a bold, raw, and unforgiving style that creates for an amusingly insane aftermath of events.
The 11-minute long shot that finishes the film is not only one of India finest cinematic achievements; it is also one of its most remarkable technical achievements.
One of the main issues with this film is that not much happens, however it is biggest strength might be exactly that. It did not try to conform to what people expect from a typical movie but rather decided to go its own route which made for a refreshing change.
Thankfully, viewers could appreciate and connect with the locals in the film which was one of Pelliserry goals. Consequently, even though it was not perfect, it was still an effective experimental endeavor
Thottappan (2019)
Thottappan is the sequel to Shanavas K Bavakkutty debut film Thottapon, which deviated considerably from the book it was based on - Francis Noronha "Thottapan". However, that difference may be beneficial.
Apart from a few superfluous pounds, the film is almost flawless in its depiction of rural India life, far removed from urban distractions.
Itthak is the title character in the film, who acts as a father figure to Sarah, his late partner daughter. After his friend died, Itthak took on the responsibility of raising Sarah and dedicated himself to her care. The story explores themes of parenthood, family relationships, community bonds, trust, and betrayal. Minnal Murali (2021)
Jaison is a tailor who gets struck by lightning but survives without any injuries – much to the surprise of those around him.
A few days after a violent incident, Jaison realizes he has gained superhero abilities. But before he can use them for good, the police suspect him of an unsolved crime.
Njan Prakashan (2018)
This 2018 film is a wonderfully done satire that follows the tale of Prakashan, a male nurse who despises his job and feels it is only appropriate for women. Prakashan wants to marry a woman with a foreign passport so he can obtain a visa without difficulty and start afresh in that country. Prakashan learns that his ex-girlfriend Salomi is moving to Germany, where she will work as a nurse and earn more money than she would in Kerala, India.
Shady money collector Prakashan works tirelessly to buy tickets for himself and Salomi, only to realize too late that it was Salomi who duped him the whole time.
Conclusion
These offer a refreshing change of pace and provide insight into rural Indian life. If you are interested in satires, we highly recommend Njan Prakashan. Otherwise, all of Pelliserry films are fairly solid and enjoyable experiences.
