  4. In 1996, a new series of coins was introduced in which the sizes of the coins were reduced and the designs were changed. The 1 rupee coin was made smaller and lighter. The 1 rupee coin was made of copper-nickel while all other denominations were made of aluminum.

  5. In 2006, the Reserve Bank of India issued a new series of coins, with enhanced security features.
