Ganesh Chathurthi is the festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha which is falling on September 10th this year. This festival is also called Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi. It is one of the most eagerly awaited, widely celebrated, and popular festivals in India. This year Chaturthi Tithi will begin at 12:17 A.M and will continue till 10 pm.

The festival is a symbol of excitement, joy, and enthusiasm that goes for a span of 10 days. On this day people get up early, take bath, and worship Lord Ganesha with Aarti.

On Ganesh Chaturthi, Lord Ganesha is worshipped as the god of prosperity and good fortune. Lord Ganesha was born in the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. And if you look at the English calendar, then Ganesh Chaturthi day falls in the month of August or September.

All the festivities associated with Ganesh Chaturthi ends after 10 days on Anant Chaturdashi that is called Ganesh Visarjan commonly. On Anant Chaturdashi, devotees immerse the idol of Lord Ganesha in water after all the rituals are done.

Ganesh Sthapana and Pooja Muhurat

Ganesh Ji was born in Madhyahanathat is why the main pooja called Ganpati pooja is preferred during this time of the day. Madhyahna is equivalent to midday according to the Hindu division of the day.

Now, according to Hindu timings, the duration between sunrise to sunset is mainly divided into five parts. These five parts are called Pratahakal, Sangava, Madhyahma, Aparahna, and Sayankal.

Ganpati Pooja and Ganpati Sthapana are done on Ganesh Chaturthi and during the Madhyahna part of the day. According to Vedic astrology, this time is considered one of the most appropriate times for Ganesh Pooja.

Now, during the midday, all Ganesha devotees perform a detailed ritualistic Ganesh Pooja that is known as “Shodashopachara Ganpati Pooja”.

Ganesh Chaturthi Significance

According to many beliefs, Lord Krishna was the one who suffered the blame for stealing Syamantak Mani. Narad Ji told him that he has seen the moon by mistake on Bhadrapada Chaturthi. And, that is why he got insulted. Narada Ji informed him on this very day Ganesha had cursed the moon. So, one who sees the moon on this day gets blamed and insulted.

On Narad Ji suggestion, Lord Krishna performed the fast of Ganesh Chaturthi and got rid of the curse. So, whosoever worships and fast on this day gets rid of allegations.

In our culture, Ganesha is the giver of wisdom and is the destructor of hurdles. He is a provider of Security, Siddhi, honor, and power. And, yearly Vinayaka Chavithi is considered as most auspicious since Ganesha appeared on the day. If this particular fast falls on Tuesday, it is called Angarak Chaturthi that helps in getting rid of all sins and curses.

The main rituals that are followed during this festival are:

Ganpati Avahana: This is the further step after devotees do “Deep Prajwalan” and “Sankalpa”.Mantras and hymns are recited so that Lord Ganesha idol is invoked with a life. This is a ritual that consecrates “murti” or statue.

Shodashopachara: This step involves a tradition of 16 step pooja where Shodasha means sixteen and Upachara means devoting offer lord. Now, Ganesha feet or idol are bathed in ghee, honey, curd, milk, and sugar which is called Panchamrit Snan. It is followed by scented oil and then Ganga Jal. After that new Vastra and clothes are offered along with flowers, unbroken rice called Akshata, garland, Chandan, and sindoor. Lord Ganesha idol is decked and worshipped with whole heart by offering Modaks. In addition, betel leaves, lightning incense sticks, coconuts, Diyas are also offered with chanting hymns and mantras.

UttarPooja: This ritual is performed before Visarjan with great joy and devotion. People of all age groups can participate in this festival whether it be pandal, homes, or temples. People sing, dance, and light up fireworks at this festival to bid farewell. The sequence of steps involved in UttarPooja is Niranjan Aarti, Pradakshins, and Pushpanjali.

Ganesh Visarjan: This is the final closing ritual of the grand festival. The idol of Ganesha is immersed in the water with a belief that he will return next year for providing wisdom. People loudly cry out the name of “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Lukariya” when they head for immersion.

In Maharashtra, this festival is celebrated with utmost devotion and excitement. Many humans are sung and offerings are made to Ganesh. Sweets are offered to Hindu Lord. and on this particular festival, clay idols of Ganesha are placed in homes or outdoor the decorated tents so that people can pay their homage. Priests perform a ritual called Pranapratishtha to evoke life. Bodhi tree is referred to as a great source of remedies that use to treat up to 50 different ailments. This also has a unique ability to produce oxygen at night time instead of Carbon Dioxide. So, this aspect of the tree makes it a popular place to worship.
