10 Malayalam suspense thriller movies that will blow your mind

I have always loved watching movies and experiencing different cultures through them. From a good, soulful K Drama to an all-out Hollywood action movie, I have seen everything and anything. But it has been the Malayali movie industry that has surprised me the most.

I had no idea that an absolute gem was hiding in the southern part of our country. And today I bring for you my favourite Malayalam thriller movies to binge this weekend.

JOJI

An absolute gem of a movie that came out in 2021. This movie stars my favourite Malayali actor Fahad Fasil, along with Baburaj, Shammi Thilakan and Unnimaya Prasad. Written by Syam Pushkaran and directed by Dileesh Pothan, the movie tells the story of three brothers and their relationship with their father.

This movie takes inspiration from William Shakespeare Macbeth and explores various ranges of human emotions through its titular character.

Drishyam 2

I first saw the Hindi version of Drishyam and was blown away by its story. I later came to realise that the original version was from Kerela and could not wait to watch it. As expected, it blew me away.

The story revolves around Georgekutty and his family and how the events of one night lead them into a cat-and-mouse chase with the police.

Written and directed by Jeetu Joseph and starring Mohanlal as the lead, the movie keeps you hooked till the end.

Salute

The salute was an interesting watch. The recently released movie had a lot to offer and revolved around quite a few interesting topics.

Written by Booby - Sanjay and directed by Rosshan Andrrews, the movie revolves around a police inspector who arrests an innocent man he thought was the murderer he had been looking for.

But he soon realises that the real murderer is still on the loose. Starring Dulquer Salmaan, the movie is a fantastic watch with a mind-boggling end.

Anjaam Pathira

Anjaam Pathira is a crime thriller that was released in 2020. The movie Written and directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas, the story revolves around the serial killing of police officers.

Anjaam Pathira is one of the best Malayali movies that have graced our screens. It became the highest-grossing Malayali film in the year 2020.

Anveshnam

The Mystery thriller directed by Prasobh Vijayan revolves around the mysterious death of a boy. This movie delicately handles the issue of child abuse and spins a web of interesting stories around it.

This movie boasts a skilful cast with Jayasurya, Leona Leshoy, Vijay Babu, Shruthi Ramachandran, Nandhu, Lal Paul and Leena Kumar in lead roles.

Memories

Another thriller from the mind of Jeethu Joseph, director of Drishyam, came to life and gave us an engaging tale.

Starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, the movie revolves around an alcoholic police officer and his quest to find a serial killer. With his tightly paced storytelling, the film garnered accolades and reached cult status, with some dubbing it the best thriller and suspense movie.

7th Day

Another interesting film starring Prithviraj Sukumaran was released in 2014. It was Syamdhar directorial debut and he did not disappoint. The story is written by Akhil Paul and Their team.

Grandmaster

Grandmaster is a neo-noir movie written and directed by B. Unnikrishnan and features Mohanlal as the lead. It is produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Sidharth Roy Kapoor under the banner of UTV Motion Pictures.

The movie is an adaptation of The A.B.C Murders by Agatha Christie and revolves around IG officer Chandrasekhar and a serial killer by the name Z, who challenges him every step of the way.

Joseph

Joseph is a 2018 crime thriller directed by M. Padmakumar and features Joju George in the titular role.

The movie revolves around the mystery of Joseph ex-wife and how this leads to a criminal case revolving around organ harvesting.

The movie received positive remarks and Joju George received Kerela State Film Award for Best Character Actor and a special mention at National Awards for his performance.

Lilli

Lilli is a revenge movie. And it is written and directed by Prasobh Vijayan and entered our screens in 2018. It starred Samyuktha Menon in the lead role and revolves around her kidnapping and escape from her kidnappers.
